Aculon Background

Aculon's original focus after being founded in 2004 was on the optical industry, commercializing repellent treatments for prescription eyewear, sunglasses and other optics. In the years since the technology platforms available & applications we work on has increased dramatically in scope. We now offer technologies for functionalizing surfaces and particles to have improved oleophobic, hydrophobic, adhesion, or hydrophilic properties. In addition we have three core industry focus areas: Electronics, Oil & Gas, Medical, and a Specialty treatment business which focuses on all other applications.

By working in a variety of industries, on countless substrates and applications requiring different surface functionality we have developed a broad suite of technologies to modify nearly any surface to behave exactly as desired. Equally important, Aculon®’s know-how includes industrial scale processes to efficiently manufacture and apply these novel coatings.

In 2010, we launched our electronics business. We are now the global leader in nanocoating of stencils with our award winning NanoClear® products. Since 2012, we have been a custom supplier of water barrier coatings  to protect printed circuits from waterproofing. The development of these novel high performance water barrier coating resulting in the launch of NanoProof®, our own series of Aculon® branded products for waterproofing of electronic devices. Now in 2020 we are spec'd into countless consumer  & industrial electronics products with a strong pipeline of programs in qualification for specification into 2021-2023 product builds.

We have been a supplier chemistry to the oil and gas industry since 2010 for a variety of applications including down well, anti-fouling and proppant treatment. As our technology bonds to metal oxides to create hydrophobic and oleophobic surfaces, we are active in the supply of chemistry preventing buildup of oil production contamination on sapphire sensors and metallic surfaces. In addition specialty treatments are utilized for lubricating particulate and rock formation to enhance oil flow in down well applications.

In 2018, we launched our medical focused business. There are a wide variety of medical applications which can benefit vastly from surface functionalization to have altered behavior, with hydrophilic surface optimization being of partcular interest. Applications include hydrophilic treatments for improved wetting and "slipperiness", microfluidic applications, repellency applications for keeping tools exposed to a variety of fluids free of contamination, in addition to water protection for electronic medical devices.

Finally, our specialty treatment business covers all other applications falling outside of the above mentioned. Our specialty division treats and supplies functional treatments for a variety of applications including watches, guitar strings, eyewear, movie screens, catalyst powders, stainless steel surfaces, industrial equipment, consumer goods and numerous other specialized applications.

The Enabling Chemistry

Aculon® technology generates highly ordered nano-scale films called Self-Assembled Monolayers of Phosphonates (SAMPs), which feature an unprecedented mechanism for coating and adhering to a wide variety of substrates. Aculon’s SAMPs form highly ordered films on oxide-containing surfaces while forming chemical bonds with substantially all of the surface oxygen atoms. In contrast, organo-silanes form bonds only with surface hydroxyl groups, and these comprise less than 10% of the available surface oxygen.

Because of this chemistry difference, Aculon® SAMPs have up to ten times the density and functionality of competitive technology. This high density of chemical bonds, coupled with superior chemical stability, enables improved surface properties and differentiates Aculon® from other alternatives.

These SAMPs can be chemically modified to impart a variety of properties including oil and water repellency, improved adhesion, chemical reactivity, and electrical conductivity. The chemistry can deliver value and solve a variety of OEM and consumer problems.
