Superhydrophobic Coating Technology

Aculon’s superhydrophobic coating treatments take hydrophobicity to even higher levels for products that are particularly vulnerable to humidity and moisture, or exposed to large quantities of water. And like Aculon’s entire range of surface treatments, you will find super-hydrophobic coatings can be applied to almost any type of surface for heavy duty water resistant coatings.

While Aculon’s specialized super-hydrophobic coatings may be industrial grade, there is nothing industrial about their application, which in fact don’t require any specialized equipment or preparation prior to their application. Aculon’s super-hydrophobic treatments don’t just repel water either, you can expect extreme protection against grease, grime and oil stains and smudges with their hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings as well.

Optimized Superhydrophobic Treatments

The Aculon treatments result in a functionalized surface that is superhydrophobic. A part treated to be superhydrophobic will have a water contact angle of 150° or greater. It will also have a sliding angle of 10° or less, meaning that a treated surface will need only be tilted vertically 10° for the liquid to roll off the surface. This is incredibly powerful repellency.

Durability

Superhydrophobic coating technology is still in its infancy. This manifests itself in durability problems with true superhydrophobic coatings. The compelling YouTube videos which depict incredibly repellent fabrics and other surfaces don’t mention that a surface will lose the bulk of that repellency very quickly if exposed to UV and abrasions. In reality, a superhydrophobic coating is not necessary on 99% of the applications we work with. Although “superhydrophobic” has become the common vernacular to describe this technology, hydrophobic coatings are usually the best option for both repellency and durability considerations.
